Connected Vehicles Explained: Skills Required to Work in Telematics & IoT

The modern automobile is no longer just a machine that takes people from one place to another. It is increasingly becoming a connected digital platform that can communicate with other vehicles, infrastructure, mobile devices and cloud-based systems. This shift is driving the growth of connected vehicles and creating new career opportunities in telematics, Internet of Things (IoT), data management and automotive software.

A connected vehicle uses sensors, communication systems, GPS, onboard computers and software to collect and exchange information. Data such as vehicle location, speed, fuel or battery status, driving behaviour, diagnostics and road conditions can be transmitted to cloud platforms. Manufacturers and service providers can then use this information for predictive maintenance, fleet management, navigation, safety and personalised services.

Telematics sits at the centre of this ecosystem. It combines telecommunications and vehicle information systems to enable real-time communication between the vehicle and external platforms. As connected vehicle technology expands, technicians and engineers need to understand both automotive systems and digital technologies.

What skills are required?

  • Automotive Electronics: Professionals should understand electronic control units, sensors, vehicle networks, diagnostics and electrical systems. Knowledge of CAN, LIN and automotive communication protocols is increasingly important.
  • IoT and Connectivity: A working knowledge of IoT architecture, wireless communication, Bluetooth, 4G, 5G, Wi-Fi and GPS helps professionals understand how vehicles exchange information with external systems.
  • Data and Cloud Technologies: Connected vehicles generate large volumes of data. Skills in databases, cloud platforms, data analytics and basic programming can help technicians and engineers work with vehicle information more effectively.
  • Cybersecurity Awareness: As vehicles become connected, protecting vehicle systems and user data becomes critical. Professionals need an understanding of authentication, secure communication, access control and basic automotive cybersecurity practices.
  • Software and Diagnostics: Modern automotive professionals increasingly need software skills. Python, C/C++, API concepts, diagnostic tools and software testing can provide an advantage in connected vehicle roles.
